🎁 The (financial) gift that keeps on giving
Anyone feel like the holiday shopping ads are running earlier and more aggressively than ever this year?
It’s been impossible not to notice that Black Friday is right around the corner.
Fun fact - for the last 40 years or so, we’ve called the day after Thanksgiving “Black Friday” because it’s supposedly the first day mega retailers are “in the black” (or making a profit) vs. “in the red” (or losing money).
Since 2010, we’ve also had Small Business Saturday - where people make a special effort to support small, local businesses.
Another fun fact - 90% of businesses in the U.S. have annual sales less than $1 million…
And I’d guess about 90% of them don’t know how far they are into the black (or red) for 2024.
Why?
Unlike mega corporations, small businesses usually don’t have an accounting department to look back and keep track of the ins and outs of money - or a finance department to look forward and make decisions to put the company in the best position for the future.
So many business owners avoid or simply forget to look at their numbers until months have gone by.
That’s a problem, because it’s really hard to feel confident about how you're doing when you’re going on a gut feeling rather than actual data.
Because even people like me, who’ve spent years looking at numbers all day every day, can’t keep it all straight in our heads.
You’ve got to have a hub where all your money information lives, which I call your Business Finance File (BFF).
