✈️Plane Brain

This week I had the pleasure of traveling to Orlando to speak at the Florida Realtors® annual convention.

Usually when I fly it’s with my family, and I’m distracted by snack negotiations and troubleshooting devices with 4% power remaining because the chargers have inexplicably disappeared into thin air.

This time, with no one to wrangle but myself, I picked up a few insights on the plane.

  1. On the flight to Orlando, the woman seated next to me asked me why I was traveling. I told her I was going to teach a class about finances. She responded immediately and involuntarily: “Ugh!” So, those of us in the financial industry still have some work to do on public sentiment.
  2. On the flight home, there was a family with a 4 year old boy sitting across the aisle. Every 5 minutes or so, he would shout “MOM WE’RE FLYING!” That little guy brought the same enthusiasm and wonder the 30th time that he showed the 1st time. It got me thinking about how we get so used to everyday things, that we forget how remarkable they really are. Like air travel, of course. But also online banking.  And offline banking for that matter. Have you ever stopped to think about how banks came to exist, and what life would be like with no banks? Crazy.
  3. Also on the flight home, I saw reports that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are engaged. I truly, from the bottom of my heart, hope their relationship started as a plan to sell jerseys and endorsements and concert tickets, and turned into the greatest real life rom-com ever. If anyone hears they’re looking for some help keeping track of all that cash, please pass my name along.

That’s all for my airplane money musings.

Take care and enjoy this Labor Day weekend!
