Feeling Nervous About Your Finances? Try This.

Inflation.

Tariffs.

Stock market volatility.

There’s a lot of uncertainty in the air (and the economy) right now, and if you’re feeling nervous about your future financial stability, you’re in good company.

In times of massive change, it can be helpful to focus on what you CAN control… which is a useful distraction from worrying about all the other stuff. If you’re looking for a way to get control over something money-wise, my best advice is to start small.

Here are a few ideas to jumpstart one or two small, feel-good wins.

  • Stagger Subscriptions: What shows are you streaming right now? Chances are, you’re not simultaneously keeping up with different series on Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV+, and Max at the same time. Why not focus on one at a time and cancel the other three for now? You can always cycle your current subscriptions so you save cash but never miss out on your favorites for too long.

  • Don’t Get Costco-ed: Maybe Costco-ed isn’t a real word, but you know what I mean. Is it even possible to get out of there for less than $300? If you must go, make a list and be strict about sticking to it. Didn’t walk in intending to buy a portable infrared sauna? Don’t walk out with a portable infrared sauna. And of course, don’t shop hungry on sample day.

  • Try a One In / Two Out Policy: What are the things you just can’t stop accumulating? For my husband, it’s baseball caps. For my kids, drum sticks and Lego sets. For me, Frixion pens. (I love color coding, what can I say!) Identify your Achilles heel when it comes to stuff, and make a rule that you won’t buy anything new in that category until you sell, donate or otherwise get rid of two items you already have.
